Family members remember Zilmon as a handsome man and a snappy dresser

History & Restoration

Zilmon J Boothe was born on October 21, 1879, the son of George Jefferson Boothe and Mary Ann Jones Boothe, originally from North Carolina. On April 25, 1906, he married Augusta Iris “Gussie” Rochelle, who was born on August 6, 1887, in Gonzales. Gussie was the daughter of Rougely Rochelle and Mary Frances Clark Rochelle, who migrated to Texas from Louisiana.

The lot where the house stands was purchased from Zilmon’s mother, and construction was completed in 1908. Zilmon, a highly successful stockman, operated his business in partnership with his brother-in-law F B Houston. In 1910, Zilmon sold the house and relocated to San Antonio, where he managed a farm and ranch real estate business. He became well known for his sharp appearance and social demeanor. Family members recall that he was often seen impeccably dressed, meeting clients and conducting business in the lobby of the Gunter Hotel.

Zilmon passed away on June 4, 1945, and Augusta followed on July 26, 1966. Both are buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in San Antonio.
