C.J. Pilgrim, owner of the Gonzales Inquirer, and his wife, Mary Fleda Boothe, built this house in 1883. Before working at the Inquirer, C.J. Pilgrim worked at the firm of G.J. Boothe, George Boothe, and C.J. Pilgrim. During his time as editor, the Inquirer was housed in the second floor of a building on the west side of present day Texas Heroes Square.
Mary Fleda was the sister of Zilmon and W.H. Boothe. The home is still owned by descendants of the Pilgrims.
