History & Restoration

James Francis Miller, born August 1, 1832, in Tennessee, moved to Texas with his father in 1845. The family settled in Hopkinsville, near Waelder, before James began practicing law in Gonzales in 1857. In 1860, he married Almira Matthews, but tragically, Almira passed away during childbirth in 1862, along with their only child.

When the American Civil War broke out in 1861, James joined the Confederacy and became a member of Terry's Rangers, serving until his company was captured in 1865. After the war, he returned to Gonzales and resumed his law practice.

In 1867, James married Julia Amanda Turner Batchelor, a woman of significant heritage. Julia was born on May 24, 1838, in Galveston, and was the first Caucasian girl born on the island. Her father, Amasa Turner, was a prominent figure in Texas history, participating in the Battle of San Jacinto and other key military efforts during Texas' early fight for independence. Julia's first husband, Benjamin F Batchelor, was an attorney who was killed in 1864 during the Civil War.

Together, James and Julia had one son, Francis T Miller, who tragically died at the age of eight.

James was a key local figure, serving as the first president of both the Texas Livestock Association and the Texas Bankers' Association. He also represented Gonzales in the 48th Congress in 1883 and was re-elected to the 49th Congress before declining a third term. His contributions to both the local community and the state's progress are still remembered today.

James and Julia purchased land in 1868, where James later built this home, which is referred to as Walnut Ridge, designed by J Riely Gordon, a noted architect of the time. The home was completed in 1901, and its design in the Greek Revival style reflected James' standing in the community and his lasting legacy. Sadly, James passed away before he could fully enjoy the home he had built. Julia passed away ten years later.
