This remarkable home was built by Mrs. Elizabeth Nelson Smith Atkinson in 1884 after the passing of her husband, Robert Alexander Atkinson, a rancher from Virginia. Born on February 5, 1817, Elizabeth was a strong and independent woman who played an active role in her family's affairs and the Gonzales community.
Following Robert's death on May 3, 1883, Elizabeth purchased a lot across from her son, William Mayo Atkinson, and set about constructing a new home. Within a year, her Greek Revival-style home was completed. The Greek Revival style was known for its grand, symmetrical design, which often included features like columns, a portico - or - a porch leading to the entrance, and wide, inviting doorways, signaling wealth and sophistication. This style was popular during the 19th century and reflected a desire for architectural grandeur and an appreciation for classical antiquity.
