Edward Sweeney, born August 8, 1897, attended Rice Institute in Houston and served as a pilot during World War I. Around 1919, he arrived in the area and managed the local cotton mill. On October 2, 1920, he married Annabell Dilworth, daughter of R S and Susan Jones Dilworth, and they had one daughter, Anabell Sweeney Ames.
In 1921, Edward acquired a wholesale grocery business from Tom Fussell and ran it for several years. By 1929, he purchased the Red & White Grocery Store franchise for south and central regions, relocating to San Antonio. After leaving the franchise, he rebranded many stores under "Model Market." His business involvement extended to serving on the board of directors for Frost National Bank and Cullen Frost Bank. Additionally, he was Chairman of Standard Baking Company, a board member of Model Markets, Inc., and A S A Properties, and formerly served on the board of Saint Mary's Hall.
In 1926, Edward and Annabell constructed their elegant English Tudor or Cotswold Cottage style home, framed by two grand live oak trees. Notably, this was the same year as the completion of the three-story Alcalde Hotel, the Remschel Building, and the record shipment of six million pounds of pecans. Although a third oak tree once adorned the property, it was lost in a 1994 storm. The home's meticulously maintained grounds evoke the charm of an English countryside setting.
