Home of a banker who founded the Gonzales Cotton Mill

History & Restoration

Robert Scott Dilworth, born on September 24, 1868, in Gonzales, Texas, was the son of prominent banker George Norwood Dilworth and Martha Ellen Huff Dilworth. After studying at the University of Virginia, Scott returned home to join his father in the banking business. A sharp businessman, he co-founded the Gonzales Cotton Mill in 1900, which thrived until the 1950s. Following his father’s death in 1911, Scott and his brother Coke E. Dilworth ran the Dilworth Bank.

On March 14, 1893, Scott married Susan Martha Jones, daughter of Dr. John C. Jones. Susan, born on September 9, 1872, in Gonzales, was educated in Seguin and Washington, D.C. In 1906, the couple sold their Victorian home and commissioned renowned architect J. Riely Gordon to design an elegant Greek Revival house, completed in 1911.

The Dilworth House, made of St. Louis pressed brick, features Corinthian columns, a mahogany-paneled hall, intricate hardwood floors, and a grand staircase with stained glass windows. Beneath the main house is a large basement that once included a kitchen, bedroom, and fireproof vault. Scott passed away in 1948, and Susan in 1957. Both are buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Gonzales.
