Jacob Stahl House

1907
206 Saint Francis Street

History & Restoration

Jacob Stahl, son of Solomon and Henrietta Wolfe Stahl of the most recent home on this tour, was born on July 15, 1885. At just fourteen years old, he joined his brother David in the produce business, and together they later established the Stahl Brothers' Store. Their enterprise dealt in dry or green hides, furs, poultry, eggs, and general groceries, reflecting a period when local commerce was diversifying rapidly. The Stahl family was also significant in the cotton trade, with Jacob eventually managing one of the largest turkey and poultry operations in the southwestern United States.

On June 17, 1906, Jacob married Selma Bath of Marshall, Texas, in a ceremony held at the historic Plaza Hotel. Selma, born on December 31, 1885, was the daughter of Morris and Charlotte Herschfeld Bath, immigrants from Germany. Jacob built this home in 1907, which became the couple's lifelong residence.

The Queen Anne architecture is notable for its asymmetrical design, steep gabled roofs, and decorative elements such as ornate trim and spindlework, a style popular in the early 20th century.
