History & Restoration

Frank Vrazel was born July 30, 1868, in Moravia, Austria. He immigrated to America at age seven and moved to Gonzales, Texas, in 1900. In 1903, he purchased the D.S.H. Darst Gin, located just east of this house, and operated it until his death. Frank married Emilie A. Templin on December 25, 1895, and together they had three daughters.

Emilie, born February 16, 1877, in High Hill, Fayette County, Texas, was the daughter of Otto and Freda Mahler Templin, who were originally from Germany. Neighbors recalled that Emilie kept milk cows in the backyard, selling milk and butter to the local community.

A small cottage was originally built around 1906 on this property. In the mid-1920s, the cottage was torn down to make way for the current home, which was completed in 1925. That same year, during World War I, a cannon was captured in August and later donated to the City of Gonzales. The cannon is now on display near East Avenue Elementary.

Frank passed away on March 8, 1935, and Emilie died on December 14, 1950. Both are buried in the Gonzales I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
